Former MLBPA Executive Director, Michael Weiner, lost a courageous and inspiring battle against an inoperable brain tumor in November 2013. Just 51 at the time of his death, Michael spent most of his adult life caring for others. In 2014, Major League baseball players honored Michael’s legacy by establishing the Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies. Since its debut, we received more than 200 eligible applications from 100 different schools across the United States; and 30 outstanding students were selected to each receive a $10,000 scholarship from the Players Trust to assist in their academic costs. Based on the number of applicants, and the content contained within their applications, it’s safe to say that the next generation of labor leaders is a passionate one, committed to improving the rights of workers.
