Players Trust celebrates its 25th anniversary with $100,000 donation to Good Sports – Donation will support the Restore Play Campaign

NEW YORK, Feb. 10, 2021 – Since its inception in 1996, the Major League Baseball Players Trust has distributed more than $25 million to nonprofits to help meet community needs on behalf of Players. To celebrate this milestone, the Players Trust today announced its partnership and donation of $100,000 to Good Sports, in support of the organization’s Restore Play campaign. 

Restore Play aims to distribute at least $15 million in sports equipment for thousands of youth organizations and children who have endured significant setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic has had a debilitating impact on access to youth sports and physical activity, particularly for children from low-income communities,” said Leonor Colón, the MLBPA’s Senior Director of International and Domestic Player Operations. “The Restore Play campaign aligns with the values of the Players Trust by raising awareness of this important cause and encouraging others to get involved.”

The Players Trust and Good Sports partnership will focus on restoring baseball and softball programming domestically and internationally.  As the country emerges from this crisis, play must be revitalized for millions of children to bring back critical structure, positive social interactions, and overall health and well-being. For the past 17 years, Good Sports has supported vulnerable youth across the country, with 80% of its efforts devoted to children of color in poverty-stricken communities.

“Many children rely on schools and community programs for active play, social interaction, and character-building experiences. The absence of these services is not just inconvenient; it can be traumatic,” said Good Sports CEO Melissa Harper. “Eighty-four percent of our community partners anticipate a decreased budget for sports equipment once play comes back, so the impact of COVID-19 on children in need and their increasingly limited access to sports will be unprecedented.”

This is among the initiatives the Players Trust is undertaking in 2021 as it celebrates 25 years of giving. The Players Trust recently modernized its logo and has added a banner in celebration of its anniversary.  Additional information will be announced throughout the year.
