The Major League Baseball Players Trust Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement with a $500,000 Donation to More Than Baseball

Donation will directly support the Minor League grant program

NEW YORK, Dec. 1, 2020 — The Major League Baseball Players Trust  today announced a $500,000 donation to More Than Baseball to provide direct support to Minor League players whose season was canceled in 2020 as a result of COVID-19.

“Major Leaguers are committed to supporting the next generation of Major League players,” said Leonor Colon, Senior Director of International and Domestic Player Operations for the Major League Baseball Players Association. “Without a season, many Minor League players have experienced increased financial hardship.  We are excited to offer our support in this time of need.”

The donation to More Than Baseball, in conjunction with the global Giving Tuesday movement, represents part of the  $1 million commitment The Players Trust made in June to support Minor Leaguers facing economic uncertainty due to the pandemic.

“I have been very impressed with the team at More Than Baseball,” said pitcher Adam Wainwright, a 15-year Major League veteran.  “They were organized and understood players and their needs very well. This is a great organization that helps players navigate many different areas of need.  I’m so happy we will be supporting Minor League players and that they have More Than Baseball to help keep their dream alive.”

Founded in March 2018, More Than Baseball is a nonprofit protecting the future of the game by providing a place where Minor Leaguers can go to get access to affordable housing, food, financial guidance, mental health support and other resources as they strive to reach the Major Leagues.  Since its inception, More Than Baseball has raised nearly $1 million to support Minor League players.

“The support from The Players Trust means the world to our organization and to our players,” said Slade Heathcott, Co-Founder and Director of Operations for More Than Baseball.  “Minor League players face an enormous amount of adversity, including poverty-level wages during the season and minimal support for their offseason development. This donation allows us to provide continued financial assistance to thousands of these players on their journey to the Major Leagues.”

The donation is earmarked to go directly to the Minor League Grant Program over the next two years, making The Players Trust the primary sponsor of this program.  Minor League baseball players who were signed to a contract as of July 1, 2020  are eligible to apply for a grant.
