I was introduced to the Action Team in October 2013 and I was immediately interested in forming a Team at my high school, Watchung Hills Senior High School. It wasn’t easy starting an Action Team at my school—I had to do a lot of work, but this was something I was committed to and determined to succeed in. I had to write and submit bylaws and a constitution to my school’s officers to be approved by the All School Council, Principal, Superintendent and our Board of Education. It took months to get approved, but finally my hard work paid off and we were ready for the Action!

For our first event we volunteered for a 5K race at the Lakeview School in Edison, NJ, a special school for children with severe physical disabilities. We handed out water to runners, gave out t-shirts, and interacted with the children and teachers at the school. Our Action Team raised over $4,000, the most amount EVER for the school.

In early September, I attended the Action Team regional training session at Citi Field in New York.  I found the session to be extremely beneficial in helping us learn how to be even better Action Team Captains and lead future events in our communities. As a baseball fan, I was also excited to interact with Major League baseball players from the Mets and Nationals  who told stories of how they have each helped their communities, and provided advice on how we could better our local communities as well.

Being a part of the Action Team is one of the best activities any high school student can partake in to become more involved in his/her community and to help others. For me, the Action Team has helped me become a better person.  It has shown me how much I can positively affect another person’s life through volunteering and by giving back to my community. The Action Team has also made me discover a new purpose, which is one that has encouraged me to continue to volunteer and help others in need.  It has also allowed me to demonstrate the greatness of the Action Team to others in my high school and to convince more and more of my peers to #JoinOurTeam!
