Please read the eligibility requirements before you begin this scholarship application. You must be a full-time Graduate or Law Student (by the time the award is distributed) with a demonstrated commitment to the labor movement. Application deadline is Monday, November 7, 2016.

Eligibility Requirement

To be eligible for an award, individuals must be Graduate or Law Students enrolled in an accredited educational institution in the United States or Canada and must have a demonstrated interest in, and wish to make a career out of, working in the labor movement and on behalf of workers’ rights. If you have not yet begun your graduate school program, your application must include a list of pending applications. To receive a scholarship, you must provide proof of enrollment. Your application should be updated as you learn of each acceptance and include your ultimate enrollment decision.

Individuals (including successful applicants) can reapply for the Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies in subsequent years.

Your date of graduation must be no earlier than December 2017.

Scholarship money will be applied towards your tuition for the Fall of 2017.

To receive an award, eligible candidates must meet a combination of criteria identified below

  • A superior academic record
  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement
  • A strong recommendation from an academic or a labor/workers’ rights practitioner
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Eligibility conditions

Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate financial need through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) scores or otherwise

General Requirements

  1. Application form must be complete, and all information requested must be supplied.
  2. Each student selected as a Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies will receive a $10,000 scholarship. (Scholarship money will be sent directly to the accredited school/university).
  3. We may select up to five (5) scholarship recipients; however, we reserve the right to select fewer than five (5) recipients and to upwardly adjust the awards given provided total awards will not exceed $50,000.
  4. All applicants must be available for a Skype interview if requested.
  5. The scholarship recipients will be contacted in February 2017, and a list of all successful applicants will be posted on www.PlayersTrust.org at that time.
  6. Should any award winner fail to enroll in a qualified graduate program before July 1, 2017, his/her award shall be rescinded.

Application Requirements

Complete and sign the two-page application found below. In addition to a completed application, all candidates are required to submit:

  • At least one letter of recommendation from academic or labor/workers’ rights practitioners
  • A one-page resume
  • A writing sample of previous work that demonstrates a commitment to the union movement
  • A detailed statement that demonstrates, through FAFSA scores or otherwise, financial need

Applications and additional documents to be submitted online only; applications must be submitted no later than Monday, November 7, 2016.

Essay Question

Michael Weiner believed that labor unions are the best means of protecting and promoting the legal and economic rights of all working people. Please describe, in 500 words or fewer, using personal examples, why you have chosen a career in the labor movement and how you intend to use your advanced educational training to further these goals.
