Manny Machado of the Baltimore Orioles has enjoyed wild success on the field in his young career.
Born in Hialeah, Fla., Machado exploded onto the scene in 2012 and has already tallied three All-Star appearances and two Gold Glove Awards. He recently stared for the Dominican National team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
But just because he has made it big in the majors, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have time to go to bat for others off the field. Machado particularly has a passion for helping Baltimore City Foundation, a non-profit that aims to help youth and underprivileged Baltimore residents.
With that passion, he hosts an annual celebrity BaseBOWL Tournament in order to raise funds and awareness for the foundation, which supports the Baltimore Parks & Recreation’s “Play Baseball” program.
The bowling tournament, celebrating its fourth anniversary this year, is broken down into games containing a team of five bowlers each. Each team features an Orioles player or other athletes from the local community. Recent tournaments have had silent auctions showcasing autographed memorabilia throughout the event.
“As we look to continue expanding and improving this event, I am grateful for the support from my teammates, coaches, and the entire Orioles organization,” Machado said via MASN. “My wife, Yainee, and I are committed to doing everything we can to make sure that Baltimore youth have every opportunity to play the game I love. The event has been very successful in recent years and has been supported by nearly all of Manny’s teammates. The popularity of the event continues to soar. This year’s tournament, scheduled for June 4, like the others, is already sold out!
In 2016, the tournament raised over $100,000, helping kids mostly between the ages of 9-12, with the money going towards the purchase of baseball equipment, uniforms and other related expenses. Manny has even partnered with New Era to create a special hat to be sold at the Orioles team store, with all proceeds going to the foundation.
